StageĀ 3 expands to include CCVC words, where traditionally the CC combination ofĀ sounds has been taught as 'blends'.
Blends ā originally the term for CC (two consonants together) combinations were called and taught as blends.
For example: frog was made up of the blend āfrā, the short sound vowel āoā and consonant āgā but now we teach it as f-r-o-g, recognising and sounding out each of the sounds individually.
For this reason we have not referred to CC combinations as blends, however, we have still covered all of the CC combinations.

You'll feel confident teaching your child to:
ā
Ā sound out the CCVC word by pulling apart each sound (segmenting), including digraphs (covered in Stage Two)
ā
Ā focus on hearing the second sound in the CCVC words, this is often missed when spelling
-
skip, s-k-i-p the second sound in skip is k
-
brush, b-r-u-sh the second sound in brush is r
ā
Ā put the sounds back together (blending) to read the word, including digraphs
-
s-k-i-p makes the word skip
-
b-r-u-sh makes the word brush
