You'll feel confident teaching your child to:
✅ hear the different r controlled vowel sounds in words
✅ sound out (segmenting) the different consonants and r controlled vowel sounds in words
✅ understand that there are different ways of spelling r controlled vowel sounds that sound the same
• the ‘er’ sound can be spelled with er, ir or ur digraphs
✅ understand that although some r controlled vowel digraphs are spelt the same, they make different sounds
• the digraph er can make two different sounds like in tiger, germ where the positioning of the ‘er’ changes the sound (except for her).
✅ match and choose the correct r controlled vowel digraph and therefore the correct spelling for common words
✅ read words correctly, trying the different r controlled vowel digraph sounds until the word looks right and is read correctly (blending and decoding)
