You'll feel confident teaching your child to:
✅ sound out the CCVCC word by pulling apart each sound (segmenting), including digraphs (covered in Stage Two)
✅ put the sounds back together (blending) to read the word, including digraphs
c-r-i-s-p makes the word crisp
sh-r-i-n-k makes the word shrink
✅ hear and recognise the second sound as this is the trickiest sound for children to hear, especially when the first letter remains the same.
- For example, the second sound in sk, sl, sm, sn, sp and st is much harder to hear (as it changes) than the second sound in br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr and tr where it remains the same.
✅ hear and recognise the second last sound which is particularly hard to hear when the second last letter is an l
