Product Review by Play Inspired Mum: DIY Construction Trucks Look Book
The local roadworks have become a huge part of our day. Miss 4 loves watching the construction machines working at extending a road near our home.
To further extend her interest, we printed off and put together our own Construction Trucks Look Book.
How we started out
Before heading off for a walk to the roadworks, we spent some time learning about the trucks in our look book.
✅ Names of the trucks
✅ Jobs of the trucks
✅ Basic parts names
With our book, we walked to the roadwork site and watched to see if we could spot any trucks from our book.
Miss 4 loved watching the trucks and proudly matched a
✅ Front end loader
✅ Dump truck
Wheel Sorting 🚧
Using coloured salt and black aquarium gravel, I partially hid the wheels from the ‘Wheels Biggest to Smallest’ page.
Miss 4 was asked to guess which were biggest and position them accordingly.
Rock Counting 🚧
In the same tray of coloured salt and gravel, I concealed the printable rocks under the salt.
Using her fingers, Miss 4 needed to find them, counting as she went and placing them into the dump truck tray on the ‘Count the Rocks’ page.
✅ Counted by correspondence
✅ Sorted by size
✅ Sorted by colour
The printable rocks made for perfect additions to our construction themed small world set up. Teamed up with some little trucks, Miss 4 was completely absorbed in her own reenactment of the road works we watched earlier in the day.
Miss 4 did find ‘building the digger’ challenging when given the pieces independently.
Instead, to start with I completed part of the puzzle and she filled in the gaps. After swapping and changing the pieces a few times, her confidence grew and she can now complete the puzzle by memory.
With incremental steps came resilience!
Educational Benefits 🚧
Our DIY Construction Trucks Look Book presented loads of learning opportunities.
✅ Fine motor skills
✅ Problem Solving
✅ Sorting by Attributes
✅ Counting by correspondence
✅ Bilateral Coordination
✅ Cause and Effect
✅ Hand Eye Coordination
✅ Vocabulary Building
✅ Prepositional Language
We both loved linking this look book to real events that are happening in our community.
