Product Review by Play Inspired Mum: Diary of a Wombat
Discovering that Diary of a Wombat was being featured in the Play Pack subscription was exciting!
Over the years we have read many of the books in the series. Being able to expand on this Australian family classic was fun with loads of learning happening as a sideline.

Diary of a Wombat Play Pack
Wombat Porridge 🥕
Inspired by the wombats request for oats, we too enjoyed a bowl ourselves. Together, Miss 4, Miss 7 and I scanned the pantry for ingredients to use to create a wombat face in our bowl of porridge.
Plant the Carrots 🥕
While setting up this activity, Miss 4’s eyes were wide with anticipation. She insisted on planting the carrots in the gravel egg carton garden bed.
We were planting and digging up carrots for a good twenty minutes! The first few times we were counting by ones, before moving to counting by decades.
✅ Counting by correspondence

✅ Bilateral Coordination
✅ Sensory Play
‘Today is’ Calendar 🥕
MIss 4 loves learning about days of the week, months of the year and the four seasons. It has long been a part of our every day, discussing what day it was yesterday, which day it is today and what day is coming tomorrow.
The weather cut outs were the highlight for Miss 4. She carefully analysed the weather through the window before casting her verdict

My Day & Wombat’s Day Activity Wheels 🥕
The flaps on the activity wheels were a huge hit for Miss 4. She loved gluing them in place and lifting them to reveal her illustrations.
We began by choosing her favourite day of the week from the book.
From here, she mapped out the wombats day, sorting events into the appropriate category. I love how she creatively extended the story in her drawing.
Inspired by our day’s adventures, Miss 4 drew her morning and afternoon illustrations. When questioned on what was to come, she referred to her routine chart that we have hanging in our kitchen area before making her predictions.
Sensory Wombat 🥕
Miss 4 was set on making a rainbow wombat. Armed with an artillery of crayons, pencils and random pieces of scrap paper and materials, she hit the mark with purpose!
Our second wombat was set to replicate the course texture that a real live wombat has. Using our pet rabbits lunch, she decorated him with hay.
Our Diary of a Wombat play pack was the perfect blend of structured academic and open ended creativity!
